This article, on the web site dottedmusic.com is called Benefits of Classical Music Training although I think it would be more appropriate to call it Formal Music Training. Whatever. In any case, here are some points to consider about what methodology to use when learning how to play a musical instrument. (And your own voice counts as a musical instrument--what is more musical than us humans!)

 

Basics like music notatation (both reading it and writing it), technique, music theory, sight reading. Music is expressed in its own language, the beauty of which is it is truly a universal language (as much as humanity has ever come up with anything "universal"), so knowing a bit of the language of music can be immensely useful and powerful when exploring the world of tone, timbre, technique, and tapping that we call music. Or just for jamming!
